Final Paper Assignment

Due Date: Thursday, December 13, 2018

Submission Instructions: Submit digitally (on Box) and bring printed copy to class

Assignment Description:

For this assignment, you will turn in the culmination of your research for the semester, including your dataset/corpus and metadata files; a detailed README focusing on the back-end logistics of your corpus assembly, metadata scheme, and computational intervention; and your seminar paper of approximately 4,500 words in length (not to exceed 7,000 words). As with any seminar paper, your scholarship should be carefully prepared with an original title, proper in-text citations (or Chicago style footnotes), and a complete bibliography or works cited page (in MLA or Chicago style). Tables and figures should have numbering and explanatory titles. For example, a title might read "Figure 1: Line Graph of Verb Density Over Time, 1850-1922." All graphs and tables should be embedded directly in the document, not in separate files or a lengthy appendix. Your paper should employ subheadings where appropriate, and you should clearly mark sections for the following areas of topical coverage:

  1. Introduction
  2. Background
  3. Methods (Includes description of corpus; text processing methods employed; and experimental design)
  4. Results
  5. Interpretation
  6. Conclusion

You need not title these sections precisely as I have done; it should be clear from each section's first paragraph what you are covering in each section. However, the order I've listed is more or less standard for the field.
